In addition to weekly distributions, WVFAP offers several programs that aid in supporting our mission and vision while providing a source of volunteer and work experience, community support and outreach, and support of our elderly and handicapped members.
Community Support & Outreach
In addition to providing food for its members, when available, WVFAP provides product to smaller food bank organizations that do not have
access to adequate resources. These organizations include:
Elderly & Handicapped Support
- Dallas H20
- Sheridan VFW
WVFAP strives to share resources and network with other organizations that provide assistance to the low-income such as other non-profits and social service organizations.
- Local church groups
- Local free clinics
- Local scout troops
WVFAP provides special times set aside for our elderly and handicapped clients to come in and shop. This keeps them from standing in long lines and they are able to take their time to shop and choose the foods they may need for special diets.
WVFAP volunteers also deliver food and non-food items each week to qualifying elderly and handicapped members who are unable to leave their home for health reasons. These weekly visits do more than provide food as they nurture positive relationships with volunteers and their clients. This service helps to eliminate loneliness for those who are unable to come in and shop for themselves.
WVFAP offers many volunteer opportunities for those who are interested. For many of our members, volunteering allows access to gain work experience and references for those who may need it. Volunteering provides a pleasant social environment for members to visit while they package food for distributions each week and allows our members to "give back."
Many volunteers receive on the job training and in some cases certification that allows them access to additional employment opportunities. Many of our elderly volunteers look forward to coming in and helping and for some, it is their only social outlet.
